Back in '85
Traveling to London, England on my big OE (Overseas Experience) I went looking for work as a chef.
After being there a few days I was walking the streets with my backpack on looking for a place to stay. Then all of a sudden I was pulled to the ground, kicked, and robbed. I couldn't do too much with the heavy backpack on.

It was not how I wanted to start my journey in a place I was unfamiliar with.
This was not on my list of things to do in London.
I felt pretty bad, to be honest. Down but not out.
As you can imagine, I was in bad shape and desperately feeling sorry for myself, but I wasn't ready to give up on my dream of using my skills and experience in cooking.
To cut a long story short: I pulled myself together, filed a police report, and organized to get more money.
Thank goodness I had a credit card for emergencies, which was not in my wallet.
Tip: Guys, place a heavy rubber band around your wallet it is always harder to get outta ya pocket. & keep your wallet in your front pocket of your pants. Never keep all your eggs in one basket... 😉 If you use a wallet.
Not that the rubberband would have stopped or helped in the robbery, but still... a good tip.
Having found accommodation, had a hot shower, and got a good night's sleep, I sorted myself out the next day. I left my backpack behind in a secure area and went to explore the city, do the tourist thing and find recruitment agencies I heard about.
While exploring, I discovered a little advertisement in a shop window of an arcade, and right off Piccadilly Circus, central London. It was a yacht that was looking for a chef.
I thought that might be a bit of an adventure.
So, I rang the number.
At that point, everything changed!
To cut yet another long story short, I got an early interview a day or so later & nailed it.
One of the main reasons why I got the job was because I was keen, had a great attitude, despite having been robbed, and was ready to go.
Being the happy skilled individual that I was, paid off to the point I was hired.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Money was never talked about on the first interview and in fact, there never was going to be a second interview, just a call, to tell me I had the job or not.
Always know how much you are going to be paid... it is poor practice to ask what is the salary in the first interview. This is often seen as you just chasing the money and not contributing to the team in a meaningful way. Generally, you should wait to be asked what compensation you were looking for.
If you are told, "you have the job if you want it", and they still haven't told you how much your salary is, do not accept it unless you have a figure that you are happy with.
Today, you will more than likely have a contract to sign, which will state salary, vacation, working hours, package, etc.)
I didn't know what the salary was. To be honest, I didn't care. I was more excited to be going to the south of France.
Packed up my goodies and went to Cardiff, Wales to join the vessel.

This was going to be something else...
M/Y Welsh Falcon
WELSH FALCON, a 53.04 m Motor Yacht built in Sweden and delivered in 1936.
She was in the top 10% by length of all in the world. She is one of 169 motor yachts in the 50-55m size range.
It was the summer of '85
When I joined her in Cardiff, Wales, in the Bute Dry Docks, when she was just finishing up her refit. She was devoid of any stores and had very few crew members. I was commissioned to resupply everything I needed for a summer in the Mediterranean.
Her top speed is 12.0 knots and her cruising speed is 11.0 knots. She could accommodate up to 12 guests, with 9 crew members waiting on their every need. The old girl had a gross tonnage of 457.0 GT and a 7.96m beam.
This was my home for that season in the Mediterranean. Learning what yachting was and was not all about.
The crew were being paid £20 pounds sterling a month... It was a ridiculous wage. Needless to say, there was a revolving door when it came to the crew. The Captain & 1st officer were English and the Chief engineer, Welsh.
007 Licensed to Kill, Roger Moore was my first celebrity, followed by Musicians from the band "Bad Company" and high net worth bankers & guests.
The galley's storage and refrigeration units were one floor down. The only issue I had to climb through a main hole in the galley floor to get to the storage. Those were the days.
It was also the days when I was paid £50 Pounds Sterling a month...
Yip £50 is equivalent to £132.60 in today's money or $179.71 USD per month. $5.89 a day... But it wasn't about the money for me. I was being housed, clothed, feed, and got to see some wonderful places.
This sort of money is not happening in this day and age. Starting salary for an entry-level position in the Superyacht Industry now depends a lot, but salaries start around $2500- 3000 USD a month. With tips of $24,000 - $30,000 USD a year additional to your salary, making your income $54,000 -$66,000 USD.

After the first dipping of my toes in the waters of charter yachts, in the '80's I eventually found myself back at sea again working on cruise ships. This was a great experience for me. In the beginning.
It was a great way to see the world. That is if you weren't stuck in the same cruise cycle of doing the same 4-7 ports every week.
Puerto Rico, St.Thomas, St.Kitts & Nevis, Antigua, St.Lucia, Barbados, St.Maarten, Puerto Rico. Boy that got old quick.

a Filipino guy that was working with me on the Cruise Ship "Costa Allerga" had been working for 11 months on no day off. Sending money back to support the family. While noble, but not much of a life...

When I was running around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean it was a blast. It was so much fun.

To the Maldives through the Suez Canal down through the red sea into pirate territory.
Lucky for us, the boss had hired a security company that employed ex-military personnel to protect the vessel and the crew. Should something happen we would be prepared. With 12 gauge pump-action shotguns, AR15's, night vision google, ( which are amazing to see at night), and razor wire uncoiled around the aft deck as another deterrent from boarding pirates.
We also had an LRAD 1000X device on board. This device is a Long Range Acoustic Device that emits sound waves and high-frequency repelling any approach pirates.
There were a couple of incidents that we never got to see or talk about, but the military guys said there was nothing to really talk about... all quiet.
We had worked out a plan of action should we get boarded. We practiced this a couple of times just in case. All the female personnel was given vacation time from this passage to the Maldives. They were to meet us in Male' Male, Maldives.
Everything turned out okay and the ladies were all glad to see us.
There is never a dull moment on a superyacht.
